Gambia’s public signal distributor for terrestrial television (DTT), Digital Gambia Limited (DGL), and its partner EXCAF-Gambia telecom recently revealed that Gambia plans to migrate from analogue to digital TV broadcasting by 2020.
The migration from analogue TV to digital broadcasting is the process in which TV services that were operating on analogue networks are transferred to work on digital-based transmission networks over a period of time.
When all networks have been transferred successfully, the analogue transmitters are switched-off indefinitely.
The Managing Director of EXCAF-Gambia, Kanteh Faly, said that the project would require high technicality throughout the country.
He added that the migration would bring high-quality television broadcasting to Gambians that would also meet international standards.
GRTS’ Director-General Abdou Touray, said that analogue television broadcasting would be phased out of the system by 2020 with Gambia becoming a success story with the rest of West Africa.
Touray announced that the national broadcaster planned to introduce more programmes that would include religion, entertainment and sports. He added that citizens would not need to buy new TV sets in order to access digital TV broadcasting, as all they would need to do is purchase an approved set-top box (decoder) that is compliant with the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) national receiver standard.
